Creating new possibilities beyond the risk of blindness
Singapore, 9 February 2017 – By 2020, the number of people with glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness after cataracts worldwide is expected to soar to 76 million globally. There is no cure for glaucoma. But there is hope with prevention, if the disease is diagnosed and treated early.
This message of hope will be encapsulated on 15 March 2017 in the Rotary Avoidance Blindness Seminar to be held from 2 to 5pm at Lee Kong Chian Auditorium, YMCA One Orchard. Organised by Rotary e-Club of 3310, the event is organised as part of World Speech Day Singapore and in conjunction with World Glaucoma Week from 12 to 18 March 2017.
The seminar will bring together five speakers from different facets of medical care in eye health. Eye surgeon Dr Gerard Nah, an advocate in using medical technology to enhance vision performance, will speak on the risks and prevention for glaucoma. Opthalamologist Dr Rupesh Agarawal who has done extensive research in numerous ocular disorders and was conferred with the Healthcare Humanity Award for his humanitarian and probono projects worldwide, will shed light on the causes of reversible blindness. Dr Low Cze Hong a veteran ophthalmic surgeon with 34 years of private practice, will speak on the condition and preventive measures of cataract. Dr Benjamin Chang, who specialises in paediatric ophthalmology, will cover eye healthcare for children. Finally, occupational therapist Chen Xuanyu, will speak on low vision rehabilitation services, which she had been involved since 2012.
The seminar will also be a platform for Rotary e-Club 3310 to raise public awareness on Gift of Sight Nepal, the club’s leading project to promote better eye-health to the people of Nepal with a one-time donation of SGD150. Rotary e-Club 3310 aims to raise up to USD150,000 to cover 1,000 Cataract eye surgeries and 10,000 pairs of sunglasses in Hetauda, Nepal. The more we can raise, the more we can do.
